Author: Allama Muhammad Iqbal
Brief Introduction of the Book:
Asrar-e-Khudi (The Secrets of the Self) is an important philosophical poetic work by Allama Muhammad Iqbal, first published in 1915. This book was originally written in Persian, and in it, Iqbal presented the basic concept of his thought, “Khudi (self)”.
According to Iqbal, the self does not mean pride or selfishness, but the power within man that leads him to recognize his own truth, awaken his abilities, and gain closeness to Allah.
The book describes three important stages of man’s spiritual development. The first stage is “obedience,” in which man follows the commands of God. The second stage is “self-control,” in which man learns to control his desires and emotions. The third stage is “divine representation,” where man assumes the position of Allah’s vicegerent on earth through a superior character.
Iqbal opposes the idea that man is taught to erase his own self or to withdraw from the world. For him, true spirituality lies in living a life with action, courage, and responsibility.
This book is written in the style of the Masnavi, and its style is influenced by Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi, whom Iqbal considered his spiritual guide.
Asrar-e-Khudi was the first part of Iqbal’s intellectual project. After that, he wrote “Ramooz e Bekhudi (The Secrets of Self-Deception), which discusses the relationship between the individual and society.
This work is considered very important for understanding Iqbal’s philosophical thought and has been translated into various languages of the world.
