Tariq ibn Ziyad was a brave Muslim general who led the Islamic conquest of Hispania in 711-718 A.D. He’s thought of to be one among the foremost vital military commanders in the world history. Below the orders of the Umayyad Caliph Al-Walid I, he led an outsized army from the north coast of Morocco, consolidating his troops at an outsized hill currently referred to as Gibraltar. The name “Gibraltar” is that the Spanish derivation of the Arabic name Jabal e Tariq which means “mountain of Tariq”.
